1. Competition Format

  • The NBA has 82 regular season games from mid-October to mid-April.
The Season concludes with the PLAY-IN and PLAY-OFF until June.

  • The Euroleague is slightly different because it must be combined with the respective club's leagues and cups. It get 38 games for the 2025-2026 season, running from October to early April.
When the regular season is over, it's time for the PLAY-IN and PLAY-OFF, as well as the FINAL FOUR which will crown the Season Champions.

2. The Game Format

Game Duration

From a game perspective, the NBA and the Euroleague have also decided to do things differently.

  • An NBA game consists of:
    4 quarters of 12 minutes → 48 minutes
Each team has 7 timeouts during the game and 2 additional timeouts in overtime.

  • In the Euroleague, the rules are more similar to FIBA:
    4 quarters of 10 minutes → 40 minutes
Each team has 5 timeouts during the game: 2 in the first half and 3 in the second half. In the event of overtime, the Euroleague grants each team 1 additional timeout.

The Ground

If you didn't already know that NBA had moved the three-point line back, 6.75m not being enough according to them...

  • The court in the NBA is also larger:
    28.65 m long and 15.24 m wide
The three-point line is moved back to 7.23 m

  • In Euroleague, the courts and the three-point line remain faithful to FIBA rules.
    28m long and 15m wide
    Three-point line at 6.75 m.

3. Supplementary Rules

There are many differences, and some rules are more like subcategories, so to simplify reading and understanding, we've placed them in a specific category: supplementary rules. Let's go!

Foul :

  • In the NBA, the foul system is completely different, but to put it simply; each player has 6 personal fouls. Technical fouls are not counted as personal fouls, only flagrant fouls are.
    - If you accumulate two Flagrant 1 (Unnecessary Contact committed by a player against an opponent) → Exclusion
    - If you receive a Flagrant 2 foul (unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent) → Direct expulsion

  • In the Euroleague, the FIBA system is used. Each player can commit 5 fouls before being ejected. Technical fouls are counted as personal fouls, and there are no flagrant fouls like in the NBA, only unsportsmanlike fouls.
    - If a player receives 2 technical fouls → Exclusion
    - If a player receives 2 unsportsmanlike fouls → Exclusion
    - If a player receives 1 technical foul and 1 unsportsmanlike foul → Exclusion

Specific rules in the game

  • In the NBA, in order to allow more space and more Wow moments and entertainment with big dunks and jelly shots, they implemented the 3-second rule in the paint on defense.
  • Whereas in the Euroleague, no time limit is imposed in the paint on defense.

We saw that the number of timeouts was different, but not only that.

  • Indeed, in the NBA, not only coaches can request them, but also players.
  • In the Euroleague, only the coaches have that power.

A little-known rule in FIBA that is applied in the Euroleague but not in the NBA is the ability to clear the rim on a shot when the ball is outside the circle area.

  • In the NBA, this is considered goal tending (an illegal block), and therefore prohibited.

The last major difference between the two biggest basketball leagues in the world concerns Jumpball or In-Between.

  • In the NBA, in addition to the introductory Jumpball, every time there is interference on possession between 2 players, it results in a new Jumpball.
  • Whereas in The Euroleague there is only an introductory Jumpball, and as soon as there is interference, possession will be given back alternately to one or the other team.
